Title: The change
Post by: Fedgar_Lurch on October 13, 2016, 03:51:15 PM
1.10 / 1.11 Update

Alright friends, so since there has been a lot of talk around the water cooler... cauldron, I figure I will dispel some rumors.

Now, our general policy is to update as soon as we have a stable version that doesn't sacrifice any of our functionality. Sometimes this can take a while as the plugin authors are not the most diligent at updating plugins. We have spent a lot of time looking into the current plugin situation, and the jump from 1.8 to 1.9 or 1.10 is substantial. A lot of plugins that we have been using for years are simply dead. There is no more support, or if there is it is spotty at best.

Based on this, we have been considering a new path.

We are thinking of opening a new chapter in SentinelCraft history, but we want to know how everyone feels about it.
One of the biggest hold-ups, is towny. It has been buggy for the last two builds and it has yet to be updated past 1.9. To put it plainly it is a dying plugin. Unfortunately getting rid of it with our current situation is impossible. So we have tried to come up with the best possible alternative. Here is what we have come up with:

First we would remove towny, but in order to do that, we would need a system to protect things that had already been built, since there isn't a way to integrate any of the more modern protection plugins, that was our first hurdle. So we thought, what about a new world? One without chunk errors, without depreciated regions and fewer and fewer new areas to explore. So we settled on a new world, but to get rid of Pern would pain me greatly, as I have spent innumerable hours building there. So I want to keep Pern, but as something different. I want to turn it into a mausoleum of sorts. A place to explore and visit, where we can create landmarks for people to visit, see what others before us have built.

With this idea of a new world, it seemed best to clean things out entirely. Start a clean slate, McMMO, Inventory, Money, Economy, Everything. This would set a clean slate for everyone, I know that for some of us that have been around for a long time that sounds terrible, but after thinking about it for a while, it has started to grow on me. Its kind of exciting to think of the new challenges that come with starting over. For those players that are starting currently, catching up to the powerhouse players in McMMo is basically impossible, same with the economy. With a fresh start, we all have the same opportunity to be the number one player. This would also give the opportunity to allow people to reinvent themselves. Everyone would be allowed to change their names during this transition (cracked and premium alike)

We haven't yet hashed out all the details, we have just looked into which plugins are dead, and worked to find plugins to replace things. This gives us an opportunity to add new plugins, features, and ideals to the server that we previously wouldn't have been able to. We can choose a new name for the world(s) you can suggest new plugins and features, we will revise the rules based on your feedback.

This is your server, and as a community, we can make it whatever we decide.

Here is a list of the proposed changes:

-   Preserve Pern as a mausoleum world. (No editing, just visiting)
-   Remove towny
-   Add Protection plugin
-   Revise rules accordingly
-   Reset Economy and rebuild with new features (Global Market, new shops plugin possibly)
-   Add Quest/adventure aspects (Something we have wanted to do for a while)
-   Add new McMMO features
-   Re-enable stats tracking (highscores and such, for bragging rights)
-   Find new plugin for clans/tribes/groups/parties (possibly)
-   Your suggestions here _____

A poll will be forthcoming where we can vote on things. I wanted to give everyone a chance to think about this and discuss it.

Please, post any questions or suggestions here on on SM chat on skype, we want to hear from everyone. At this point we are just brainstorming and there are no bad ideas when you are brain storming. Lets hear what you have to say.

If we were to start over, would donors lose their money benefits?
Title: Re: The change
Post by: plerp on October 14, 2016, 06:05:32 PM
I don't think 1.9 would be bad, but I love Sentinelcraft the way  it is, and what about the whole towns?
A fresh start would be cool and all but i really don't know which I would prefer.
The biggest question is that since Sentinelcraft is a Towny server, what will we do? So at this point I Vote to not change.
Though my decision may change if some good suggestions for the future are given.

Post by: Fedgar_Lurch on October 14, 2016, 06:09:55 PM
Donors would keep other perks, but the economy is being reset. So any money on this server stays where it is. That is only fair.

And it would not be towny, but it would be Towny in spirit. Basically they Towny plugin is dead, and there isnt a good replacement that we can find. So we will make a system where everyone's builds are protected and allow people to work together. (Which is what towny is about in essence.)

Would this protection cover pvp too? Or will the server be made survival?

The server is already survival. And yes protection would cover PvP
We have some interesting ideas for PVP actually.

Its only been a few hours and after think i have changed my vote to yes be cause 1.9 brings my favorite enchantment, MENDING!!!
I still think that if you update past 1.9 add 1.9 compatibility.

this actually sounds really cool to be able to visit the old world still. im a little sad about my mcmmo which ive worked hard to get to the top but at least now i can have some good competition with migas/rich and all the others that we're high leveled. either way im looking forward to this

I support this 100% because Zweerd will have to build the castle all over again.

On a serious note though I'm on board with this because everytime I logged on I felt there was absolutely nothing for me to do other than catching up with friends, for me personally I think this will make the server ALOT more fun and interesting. Just my opinion though.

I find it comforting that pern remains. Im also curious on how a fresh start will be. I think it will be interesting. Of course i won't find it easy to restart but i think it will be interesting. The thing im the most worried about (to be honest) are my builds, but seeing as pern remains, they remain, and i can live with that.

I just realized you cant have my support if you don't make it at least 1.9 compatible, because i know you can have it 1.10 with 1.9 compatibility. I say this because my computer wont run 1.10+ I always get "failed to write core dump" and then i have to redo my whole .minecraft folder, to even play 1.9  and below again. so yeah...

A new world.. could be good, but also can effectively kill a server if there ends up being a long long delay between decision for new world and it appearing. (sadly seen it happen before)

I'm pleased that the donator perks will be kept. (flight, kits, virtual chest and anvil etc)
Are there plans to keep other Pern items like the token shop etc.

I have a question / suggestion. for those of us who have built things we'd like to keep and expand on.
World Edit Schematics. (not copy and paste as that can have... issues)
Sure you wouldn't want to import large sections of Pern but some special and complicated builds could be pulled over.

I'm guessing you'll need pioneers to go out and find good biome warp point.:)

I'll have to install 1.10 SP and have a go then... urk.

This will surely keep me up at night.
A new beggining, a new start. I had some thoughts about this but never thought it would happen.
I have mixed feelings tho. I have spent a lot of time on Sentinel building, collecting materials, leveling skills etc.
A thought of it being all gone is kinda sad.

But, like Dark said, having the larger towns and other memorable spaces being saved in a "museum" is confronting.

On the other side, things have become dull and boring, like Forst said.
I've always complained how I didn't have time to come on (parents, school and what not) but now that I do, I have nothing to keep me busy. If I have someone to talk to I stay to have a chat but shortly leave for another game. If "The Change" happens I'll sure be more active and have something to work on. A "future projects" brainstorm will ensue ;D
I am very excited for this.

You have my support. Whatever you decide, I'll be with you.

Cheers.

I loved SC since day 1(of my arrival). I never liked 1.9 too much. Yet it world be nice for a fresh start completely in it. I am on board with everything. It would be a nice change and a new canvas for new ideas. Nice for occupation too.

I personally support the change. I failed in Bunker Building twice because of cave encounters, making my bunkers potentially unsafe. So I thought to myself, maybe a new world would be great! A fresh start, a new beginning.

Will/Can whatever replaces Towny (or, I suspect, multiple plugins?) also include toggling of fire and mob spawning, etc? These are really really wonderful features that feel almost essential after all this time, lol!

I completely support this decision.  I was somewhat sick of the old world, if anything.  And updating to 1.9 would give idiots like me a fair shot with PvP (until someone gets 1,000 axes or unarmed, which will take less than 48 hours if we're being honest).

I believe I remember someone saying commandblocks are disabled for the server, but maybe you can enable them on this new one (yes, I know how servers and worlds work - you would have to enable them on the entire server, but this is just a suggestion).  This would give the admins room to experiment with commandblocks a little, instead of relying on plug-ins.  Personally, I dislike modding my Minecraft because I'm somewhat experienced with commandblocks, so I've always thought, "everything you can do in a mod, you can do with commandblocks."  This holds true a pretty good majority of the time - it just takes a while to actually get used to commandblocks, of course.

By now, I think the SkyBlock world is a bit more dead than it was, maybe, a year ago.  Perhaps it's time to restart on this as well?  I'm sure there is another SkyBlock plug-in that is a bit more expansive than the one we have now.  Also, this is the only server I've played on that gave you a limit for your island.  I'm not saying I don't like, and I'm not saying it's wrong ("what can you do in this amount of space" kind of theme).  However, a lot of new players want to play SkyBlock, and having an inferior SkyBlock plug-in may be the death of the world on our server.  It does tend to get a little boring if it isn't updated.  Further, I would like to add that my McMMO transferred from Pern to SkyBlock.  If we're resetting our McMMO, will this change it in all servers?
(The reason why I'm talking about different worlds is because I'm seeing this update as an opportunity to change the server in general.  If you're going to update part of it, you may as well update the server in general.)

As for changes in minigames, I think Mob Arena could use one.  To be honest, I feel reluctant about this opinion; I don't know yet whether I support it or not, but I do want to bring it to your attention in case anyone else does.  Some Mob Arena-like plug-ins have the ability to upgrade your classes, if not make a custom one.  They also have "abilities," which are just "magic spells" - something that can be used to attack, support, used for movement, etc., and has a cooldown.  The only problem with this is that it makes Mob Arena a lot more different than it was before.  Honestly, I'm fine with any change this server has to offer, but having "upgradeable" classes could make Mob Arena a bit less competitive (To put it in perspective, you said something about bragging rights and a stats board.  How can someone brag about killing another player if it was 1,000 axes vs. leather armor?).  As for me, I'm fine with upgradeable classes, as long as the upgrades aren't too overpowered (maybe +1 or 2% of a stat for every upgrade).

Obviously, I'm sure you will fix the minigames that are currently broken during the change, or soon after.

Also, a custom mobs plug-in could be fun.  Instead of the boring mobs that always knock me into my 32x80x64 hole and kill me, there could be some harder mobs that occasionally spawn.  So maybe a skeleton with an overpowered bow, or a zombie that gives you a Wither effect.  I've also seen "bosses" that spawn every 15 minutes to an hour, along with a chat message that says "A boss has spawned near X Y Z coordinates!"  These bosses could be vanilla, such as a skeleton with lots of health and a fully automatic bow, or a bunch of Ghasts riding a zombie with lots of health.  Fighting these bosses would give you a ton of XP, money, or some other cool rewards.  Or maybe even the most overpowered item in the game, a Mending book.  You said something about adding some "adventure" aspects.  I don't know exactly what that means, but I feel like these custom mobs could support that idea.
^^^ If anything, I think the custom mobs is the most reasonable suggestion I even had, and that deserves my full support.  I'll actually be a bit sad if I don't get something of a challenge from the hostile mobs - I don't think we die enough on this server.

Sorry for any bad grammar.  It's pretty early where I am and I was playing the IW beta all night (I'm disappointed with it, but I play mostly zombies anyway).  In any case, whether you're Fed or not, please at least skim through here and give me some other opinions.

I'm all for the change... But is there a date when it will happen? I feel like it's a bit pointless, especially for a newcomer, to even play, as it will all be wiped away. I know, it'll still be in Pern, but I'm not at the point where I can build anything that looks as fabulous as what some of the rich sempais have built.

You should just update Towny yourselves? Which you should have done instead of waiting.  If you don't know how to do that, I know a guy.

Edit: But if you just want to get rid of Towny altogether, I guess that's alright too.
If you do keep towny, I propose adding some extra restrictions for making new ones.  In order to prevent 200 single-player towns from being created.
